What Is Suzuki?

How is the Suzuki method of teaching different from the "traditional" method?
The Suzuki philosophy believes that learning music is like learning a language. Students learn by listening: they listen to Suzuki CDs and play by ear, observing and emulating the teacher's playing. The method emphasizes careful listening, repetition, and encouragement. Students become comfortable with their instrument before learning to read music. A supportive environment is essential: the parent works closely with the teacher and the student.

What age can my child start learning Suzuki violin? Can one be too old to learn?
The recommended age is 4 years old. However, WSS students range in age from slightly younger to very mature adults. The methodology keys into the individual needs of a student at any age.

Who is Shinichi Suzuki?
After the devastation of his homeland following World War II, Dr. Suzuki searched for a way to bring joy back into the hearts of the children of Japan. Shaped by his experiences as a professional musician in Europe and the study of philosophy and education, Dr. Suzuki understood that music was ultimately a means to a larger end.

Dr. Suzuki believed that all children are born with talent that simply needs to be nurtured in the proper environment. He developed the revolutionary idea that children can learn music the same way they learn language. The nurturing comes from the teacher, the parents, and playing with a group.

Though virtuosi throughout the world have emerged from the Suzuki experience, they—and their fellow Suzuki students—appreciate that Dr. Suzuki's principal goal was the development of the "noble heart" that potentially resides in every individual. For over 60 years, Suzuki practitioners have refined the Suzuki method, building on Dr. Suzuki's insights and drawing from current relevant research, never losing sight of Dr. Suzuki's goal of unleashing the potential of the "noble heart".
